French Public Holidays 2009

In France un jour férié is the equivalent of a bank holiday/legal holiday/public holiday.

However, when a public holiday falls on a Thursday or Tuesday, it is common practice to also take off the Friday or Monday thus making a very long weekend.  The French call this faire le pont (make the bridge).  When this occurs many businesses will close for the full period or if they open on one of the ‘bridge days’ they may only have a skeleton staff on hand.

National Public Holidays in France 2009

  • Thursday 1 January – New Year’s Day (Jour de l’An).
  • Sunday 12 April – Easter (Pâques).
  • Monday 13 April – Easter Monday (Lundi de Pâques).

  • Friday 8 May – VE Day – WWII Victory Day (Fête de la Victoire 1945).
